The Kent's Magnificent Moths Project is the UK’s biggest-ever dedicated moth conservation scheme 🙌🦋Since its launch in 2021, more than 26,000 people have joined 345 events aimed at helping eight target species, including the fluffy white Marsh Mallow, the elegant Sussex Emerald and the wasp-mimicking Fiery Clearwing. We celebrate the team's successes and their lasting impact here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ePdQDrPFThe project was made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners including Canterbury City Council, Natural England, RSPB, Forestry England and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership.

#Trees are some of the most fascinating, awe-inspiring, and beneficial organisms on Earth, and woodlands are their homes. In recent years, trees and woodlands have become increasingly important as they help to clean the air and protect biodiversity. This week we can say #thankyou to Positive News for taking a look at some of the current stories surrounding trees and woodlands. https://lnkd.in/eATAxrhv The first story is set in Scotland, where the ancient Atlantic Forest, which dates back more than 12,000 years, is gradually being restored. The project is made possible by collaboration between the The Wildlife Trusts Craig Bennett and Aviva Amanda Blanc. To achieve the UK’s net-zero ambition, it is estimated that woodland cover needs to increase to at least 17% across the UK by 2050 (it is currently around 13%). Research, surveying and working with communities are the first steps to establishing which areas of land are suitable for rainforest regeneration. Scottish Wildlife Trust Trees for Life Forestry and Land Scotland Forestry Commission Royal Forestry Society Moor Trees The Woodland Trust Rainforest Alliance Rainforest Alliance UK Business Network Plantlife International Future Woodlands Scotland https://lnkd.in/esUVGxjC and others are all continuing to work hard to make this vision a reality. The second story takes us to the United States, where protection has been reinstated for the 17 million acre #Alaskan Tongass National Park #thankyou Earthjustice. Whilst the third highlights the hugely beneficial role of green spaces in our city that concludes doubling tree cover in European cities could reduce heat-related deaths by a third. Grasslands are the greatest way to sequester carbon. Carbon is cycled from the atmosphere through native grasses into the soil more than other perennials. Restoring prairies and native grasses will play a big role in carbon sequestration, flood prevention, and water infiltration. It will also create solutions for probelms such as lack of water retention in soil, low organic matter, and low soil biology in farmlands across North America.

National Bison Day 🦬As our fellow Bison fans celebrate National Bison Day across the pond We thought we’d take this moment to also raise a hoof for our European Bison! Our Bison roam the Blean woods near Canterbury! The Bison Blean project is a flagship wilding project by @wildwoodtrustuk & @kentwildlifeSpecies in the UK are declining at their fastest rate for thousands of years according to the latest State of Nature report and unfortunately human management alone is not enough to create the kinds of habitats species need. What we need are natural solutions and this is why we have taken this first step to drive ‘Wilding’ at Wildwood Trust and in collaboration with Kent Wildlife Trust across some of their sites in Kent. Wilding is when nature is given the tools and space it needs to recover itself and has the potential to increase abundance of biodiversity to levels beyond what human management achieves and helps store carbon.#wildwoodtrust #wildwoodtrustkent #ukwildlife #conservation #hythe #whiststable #canterbury #bison

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Australia points out Australia was hit hard by bushfires during the summer of 2019-20 – the most catastrophic bushfire season ever experienced in the country’s history. Up to 19 million hectares were burnt, with 12.6 million hectares primarily forest and bushland. 33 lives were lost and around 3,094 homes destroyed.Towards Two Billion Trees is an ambitious 10-point plan for the next 10 years launched by WWF-Australia.World Wildlife Fund | #Worldwildlifefund #Towards2billiontrees

Maintaining traditional woodlands can be a labour- and equipment-intensive process of management, using coppicing to encourage biodiversity. Paul Hadaway, of Kent Wildlife Trust, is working with The Wildwood Trust to introduce bison to Blean Woods. The large animals will help manage the woodland, clearing space for new plants, and allowing for improved biodiversity, as part of their natural behaviour. In this episode, we learn from Paul, and from Sara King, of Rewilding Britain, how woodland managers can work more closely with nature, and at some of the challenges of introducing new—or locally extinct—species into public lands. #biodiversity #woodlands #forests #bison #wilding #rewilding #nature #forestmanagement https://lnkd.in/gAKwZ_pX

Happy #WorldWildlifeDay!Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the abundance and diversity of our local Oxfordshire and Berkshire plants, animals and ecosystems. Oxfordshire supports a number of national/international priority habitats, including chalk grassland, beech woodland, fen, wetland and marshland and is also a critical area for freshwater biodiversity. Similarly, Berkshire boasts many principal habitats such as heathland, wetland, traditional orchards, grassland and woodland. Each of these habitats support a number of nationally rare/threatened birds, mammals, plants and invertebrates, as well as offering research and conservation opportunities. As spring approaches, there is yet more opportunity to get involved in #citizenscience approaches, all of which contribute to conservation efforts in these important ecosystems. So, what local wildlife and habitats do you want to celebrate today #LetsGetRecording #Wildlife #Nature #everyoneneedsnature #UKConservation #Spring

Wilder Woodlands🌳🌲🌳Avon Wildlife Trust will embark on an 18-month project focussing on a large woodland area in North Somerset, including Goblin Combe and surrounding land. The work, funded by the Natural England Species Recovery Programme Capital Grant Scheme, will improve habitat for Lesser and Greater horseshoe bats, Barbastelle bats and Dormice. The funding will allow us to protect these species and help them recover – through better-connected habitats with a broader range of native plants, offering improved foraging and nesting sites. The work will also enhance the landscape – making it more resilient to flooding, erosion and extreme weather. In addition, we will engage the local community, helping them understand our target species' role as critical components of a healthy and resilient ecosystem. There are unprecedented pressures in North Somerset, including development and damaging agricultural practices. With less habitat availability, a multi-species approach is needed to create better habitats and connect them to the broader area. AWT will work with neighbouring landowners to improve prospects for bats and dormice by turning inhospitable plantation woodland into a thriving, supportive habitat. #WilderWoodlands

Do you own land in the National Forest?🌳 Our grant schemes can support tree planting and woodland management, to help grow the Forest, as well as creating habitats for wildlife and green spaces for recreation.🌱Grangewood Farm and Forestry is a fantastic example of a scheme we've supported, planted during the early years of woodland creation in the National Forest, and demonstrates how trees can be a catalyst for change. Trees are now linking existing and ancient woodland around the site to create a wonderfully wooded landscape, actively managed to support the local woodland economy, benefiting the land with natural flood protection and supporting wildlife. 🐝Our grants are simple to apply for, with help and assistance at hand to offer advice and support with applications. We can fund 100% of costs to cover design, planning and implementation of forest creation, 60% of woodland management costs and up to 100% for biodiversity improvement options. Find out more and apply, here: https://rb.gy/ak1vcIf you're an individual and would like to support our work, you can make a donation or dedicate a tree, here: https://rb.gy/qsxr0#LandownerStories Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
