When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a dog feeding station
Building the frames
The first step of the project is to build the two frames for the dog feeding station. Cut the components from 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges with attention.
Attaching the slats to the faces
Next, attach the 1×4 slats to the front and back of the frames. Use 1 1/4″ brad nails to secure the slats to the frames. Place a 1/4″ piece of plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Align the edges with attention for a professional result.
Fitting the side slats
Continue the project by attaching the 1×4 slats to the sides of the dog feeding station. Use 1 1/4″ brad nails to lock the slats into place and place the 1/4″ plywood spacers between them.
Attaching the bottom slats
Building the bottom of the feeding station is a straight forward process. Cut 5 pieces of 1×4 lumber and secure them to the bottom frame using 1 1/4″ nails. Building the bottom will allow you to create a storage compartment for the food, toys and other items for your pet.
Attaching the legs
Build the legs from 2×2 lumber and fit them to the bottom of the station. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2″ screws into the frame.
Building the top of the station
Building the top of the dog feeding station is the next step of the woodworking project. Use 3/4″ plywood for the components. Mark the cut lines to the plywood, drill starting holes and get the job done using a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with 120-grit sandpaper. Make sure you adjust the diameter of the holes according to the bowls you are going to use.
Fitting the trims to the top
Attach the 1×2 trims to the exterior of the lid. Use glue and 1 1/4″ finishing nails to lock the trims into place.
Attaching the top
Fit the top to the feeding station and align the back, as shown in the diagram. Use two hinges to lock the top lid into place.

Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Use 120-200 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. The best part of the project is that the feeding station has two bowls and a large storage area for food and pet toys.
